Golden Lion Tamarin
The Golden Lion Tamarin, endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest, is one of the world's most endangered mammals.
This 7-day birding tour will take you to explore a wonderful part of the Atlantic Forest located in different altitudes between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in two of the best locations for birding in Brazil: Ubatuba (Serra do Mar State Park) and Itatiaia National Park.
The forests of the Serra do Mar State Park shelter and protect hundreds of species of birds and other endangered animals: jaguar, puma, ocelot, muriqui, tapir, paca, sloths, toucans, tanagers, hummingbirds, bellbird, guans and hundreds of other birds. The province of Ubatuba is covered by more than 90% by forest! Here you can explore Mangrove forests, the Restinga (sandy soils) and Tropical moist broadleaf forest. At Ubatuba were observed more than 500 species of birds including lot of endemics and rare. This is a very high number considering that in all Brazil are present more than 1800 species.
Itatiaia National Park provides many of Brazil's endemic species. Specialties in the park include Saffron Toucanets, Red-breasted Toucan, Green-crowned Plovercrest, Surucua Trogon, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Itatiaia Spinetail, Slaty Bristlefront, Shrike-like and Black-and-Gold Cotinga, a fabulous variety of hummingbirds and many more for a total of about 400 species registered.
Ubatuba: Festive Coquette (NT), Saw-billed Hermit (NT)(endemic), Reddish hermit, Brownbacked Parrotlet (VU)(endemic), Blond-crested Woodpecker, Crescent-chested Puffbird (NT), Tawny-throated leaftosser, Scaled Antbird (endemic), Salvadori’s Antwren (VU)(endemic), Unicolored Antwren (NT)(endemic), Spot-breasted Antvireo (NT), Slaty Bristlefront (NT)(endemic), Black-cheeked Gnateater (endemic), Fork-tailed Tody-Tyrant (VU)(endemic), Spotted Bamboowren (NT), Sao Paulo Tyrannulet (NT), Buff-throated Purpletuft (EN)(endemic),... Long-billed Wren (endemic), Red-necked Tanager, Brazilian Tanager, Green Honeycreeper and many more.
Itatiaia: Green-crowned Plovercrest (endemic), Frilled Coquette, Brazilian Ruby (endemic), Saffron Toucanet, Pileated Parrot, Yellow-fronted Woodpecker, Rufous-tailed Antbird (endemic), Itatiaia Spinetail (endemic), Serra do Mar Tyrannulet (NT)(endemic), Black-and-Gold Cotinga (NT)(endemic), White-bibbed Antbird (endemic), Gray-capped Tyrannulet (NT)(endemic), Velvety Black-Tyrant (endemic), Pin-tailed Manakin (endemic), Brown Tanager (NT) (endemic), Brassy-breasted Tanager (endemic), Gilt-edged Tanager (endemic), Specklebreasted Antpitta, Long-trained Nightjar and many more.
Owling can offer: Black-capped Screech-Owl, Striped Owl, Mottled Owl, Tawny-browed Owl, Variable Screech-Owl and others.
Mammals includes: Black-tufted Marmoset, Brown Howler Monkey, Black Capuchin, Three-toed Sloth, Big-eared Opossum, Squirrel, Capybara and others.
